Myocardial Infarction Animal Models & CRO Services

Cardiac disease is a major cause of death and disability in the U.S. and worldwide. This is often due to atherosclerosis ("hardening of the arteries") and occlusion of the coronary arteries, leading to myocardial infarction (MI, "heart attack") and its late complications. About 1 million Americans suffer an acute MI each year, accounting for 180,000 deaths. About 5.8 million Americans have chronic congestive heart failure (CHF), most often due to ischemic heart disease and previous MIs.

NeuroVasc is experienced in models of myocardial infarction (MI) in mice and rats. In these models, the left coronary artery (LCA) is surgically ligated, resulting in low blood flow (ischemia) and death of cardiac tissue supplied by that artery. MI volume is assessed by histological methods. Both permanent and temporary (ischemia/reperfusion) MI models are available.
